Strongest University Competition
The Maryland Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) is starting an annual concrete mix design competition for local universities called the Strongest University competition. Although the specifics are still in the works, the basic goal of the competition is to design an economical concrete mix using materials that are typically used in the field that can handle a particular load. The intent of this new competition is to expose students to the concrete industry and help strengthen their knowledge of basic concrete design. The competition would likely be held in the spring, and the fall would be spent having members of ACI and affiliated companies come to campus and hold information sessions and hands on work shops.
In addition to becoming involved in the competition, we were strongly encouraged to begin a student chapter of ACI here at UMD. This would be a great opportunity for students to build relationships with companies in the concrete industry. Getting UMD more involved in ACI could open up a lot of doors for students in terms of internship and job opportunities. Even if you are not necessarily interested in being involved in the concrete industry specifically, it would be useful to gain hands-on experience and develop a basic working knowledge of concrete design. We are trying to gauge interest in getting this new student organization going. Please fill out the following poll to indicate if you would be interested in being involved in a student chapter of ACI.
